How-to Make a Website?

Websites are very fun to make, and if done correctly, they can actually produce some extra money for you. Whether you’re just looking for a hobby or a side income, building a website doesn’t need to be hard. There are many different ways to make a site, some are challenging and take hours and hours of labor, and others take only an hour or two and are quite simple.

What kind of website?

The first step in making a website is deciding what type of site you want. If you want a blog, or a place to share your opinions, I recommend using something like WordPress. If you want an actual store or online marketplace, then you’ll have to invest in some merchant software and services. If you just want a regular old content website, then your choices are pretty much limitless.

Domain name and web hosting

After you have chosen the type of site you want, it’s time to purchase the things that are required for any website: a domain and web hosting. As far as domains go, I highly recommend getting a .com domain, as they are much more professional, and better in general than any other TLD. Take your time when choosing a domain, too, as you want to find a domain that is memorable, and preferably short.

Once that’s done, you need to find some good hosting. There are literally thousands of hosts out there to choose from, so take your time. Try not to be fooled by the marketing schemes of low-quality hosts, and remember, just because a host is cheap doesn’t mean you should choose them.

Website template or theme

After you have chosen a domain name and hosting, it’s time to find a website template. I recommend finding a template because building a site from scratch will take quite a long time, and it’s not easy to learn how to do. As far as finding a specific template that’s right for you, I recommend you surf the web for a while and look for ones that you like. If you’re unsure about a template, have a friend or family member look at it and tell you what they think. It’s always a good idea to get a second opinion on things.

Write unique content for your website

The next step is to start write content for the site. I recommend sitting down for a few hours and just writing a few pages of content. Now you don’t have to slave away for hours or write 100’s of pages of content, but the more effort you put in the better your site will be. If you don’t already know, content is VERY important to the success of your website. If you don’t think you can write very well, you may want to outsource some work to some freelance writers, so you will know for sure that you’ll get good content.

Test and validate your new website

Once you’re done with all that, you should have a working website that is live on the Internet. However, you should know now that websites don’t always stay working, and sometimes you just need to add a little extra feature to your site. To do this, you’ll need to know some basic web development languages. I recommend brushing up on some HTML and CSS, and maybe picking up a web development guide book to help you learn. There’s no need to master the languages, but just make sure you can do the basics. The last step in the process should be checking your site for errors and optimizing it. To do this, open up a web browser and go to your website. From there, click on every available link, ensuring that each of them works. Follow the links until you are positive you have viewed every page on your site. If you find an error, either fix it if you know how, or look up the solution on Google. After you’re sure there are no errors, optimize your site by eliminating excess files that aren’t necessary.
